Whether or not you'd like a smaller bezel or different size screen/case, should the next iPad have no home button on the front. It could have one on the side/top.
Put it on the screen and let it rotate to the same relative position no matter how the iPad is turned. Let if fade to a small "x" overlaying the running App, but be activated when held for a second. JMHO.
The bezel size is important for hand holding. Think about it.
I've been using multitouch gestures since they came out. (legitimately, since I'm a developer) I almost never use the home button anymore, and use the five-finger pinch instead. I wouldn't miss the home button if they got rid of it entirely.
Problem is, the five-finger pinch just isn't possible for some physically disabled people. And I'm sure many people prefer the button. I say leave it where it is. It's not exactly in the way.
New iPad owner here, what is the "five-finger pinch"?
Gotta have it to stop the apps from juggling too. I don't know of a gesture for that. That's all I use it for know that I have the gestures.
Getsures or virtual buttons can be made for anything. Physical buttons become loose or wear out. Ask the thousands of iPad owners with home button issues.
Open the smartcover?I like that idea once the iPad is on, but how do you turn it on? It goes back to using a button on top.
Or they could always take a cue from the MacBook Pro's trackpad, and make the whole surface into one huge button![]()
