For computers, Apple usually discontinues them. However, for the iPhone they have kept the old version around at a discounted price.

Not sure what they will do for the iPad, but if I had to guess - I think Apple will discontinue the first generation iPad and you will not be able to purchase from Apple. You might however, find it at other retailers at a discount until they are sold out.

Does anyone think Apple will offer the first gen iPad at $399, say for an 8gb model, the way they are doing with the iPhone 3GS for $99 (now $49) when the iPhone 4 came out?

I can see both sides of the argument...

3rd party suppliers will or ....

iPad 32GB £510 Apple
iPad 32GB £300 eBay

Get apple care and youll be laughing.

Mind you depending on what Apple announce tomorrow. Ill see whether iPad 2 is worth the purchase.

Regularly I'd say "No" but the marketing advantage of saying "The Apple iPad - Starting at $399" is pretty powerful in deterring people from getting an $800 Xoom.

Agreed. It will be interesting to see what Apple does.

While there is some chance that Apple will keep the iPad 1 around, I don't think that they will.
