How come Show View options default settings do not work on secondary drives ?
I have to go in and alter every folder to get it how I want them.

Never tried "Use as defaults" on a secondary drive. Are you saying that you did this to an external at the "root" level, and folders on the drive did not obey?

And, what is on the drive might make a difference. For the dumbest example I can think of, a clone of your hard drive is probably not going to respond to the above.

Done at root level.

It is not a Clone of anything, just used for storage.

I don't know the answer. Thought maybe someone else would.

I do know that I see some strange things relating to external drives as well. If I change a folder on the external to List View, then close it, the next folder I open on the internal drive is in List View, despite the fact that every one of my folders are set to Icon View.

Oh well, thanks anyway, maybe somebody else has the answer.
