I've been trying to show the Hard Disks, External Disks, Connected Servers icons to show up on my desktop but they won't.

I've opened up finder preferences and even though I've ticked all the boxes, they won't show up on the desktop. Is there a particular reason for this?

If you've made the changes in Finder preferences, try relaunching Finder by holding the Option key down while right-clicking the Finder icon on the Dock and selecting Relaunch. If that doesn't work, delete the following:
/Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
/Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist
Then enter this command in Terminal, followed by pressing enter:
killall Dock

The first bit worked. Thanks alot. :)
