Is there much difference between the two. I know that the 420s have two drivers in each earphone as opposed to the 310s single driver. But does it make much of a difference?

Perhaps I should get this thread moved to buying advice.

I can't help you out much as I havn't tried the 3 series.

However I have an older model of the 4 series and they are excellent!

No. This is the right place. I preferred the 420 over the 310 in the time that I got to test them. I would say the difference is not as bad as the difference between my e4's and e3's. The bass was definitely better on the 420s; but, there is a fairly significant difference between the se530s and the 420s. Try checking CNET, when they do reviews they usually compare them to other models...

K, thanks everyone. I was asking cause I already own the SE310s, but I ws wondering I should step up to the 420s.

After using Shures for a few years, and while being broadly satisfied with the sound (although bass response was always a bit lacking), eventually I got frustrated with the brittle cable and it's chunky connectors.

I would now recommend the Sennheiser IE8s. These have adjustable bass control, replaceable cables, comfortable fit and sound on a par with the Shures.
