An octopus's garden
I'm having a few issues with my 2008 2.53 unibody MBP and I'd like to get suggestions on possible causes and solutions.

1. I'm not always getting the 'low battery' warnings and sometimes the computer completely shuts down without saving anything in the VM. I'm getting concerned because this is happening more frequently. Battery health is down a bit (77%) so it probably needs to be calibrated. Actually, that's shocking. The health was 91% less than two weeks ago!

2. The computer does not always go to sleep when I close the lid. Sometimes the screen stays on.

3. It takes a long time for the HD to stop spinning. If I put the computer to sleep, say to put it in my bag, when I pick it up I can hear a whirring noise (sounds like a light saber!). If I let it rest a few mins, this stops, but I'm not sure why it takes so long.

4. I usually connect the MBP to an external display in the evenings when I come home. The problem is that when it's on the external display, I can't shut it down or get it to sleep properly. If I shut it down, it will shut down and then wake up 5 - 10 mins later. If I put it to sleep, it will frequently wake up.

Are these things connected? I still have applecare. Is it time to take it in? I will be near an apple store this weekend, so it could be a good time to have it looked at if so.

FYI, I have reset the pram and the SMC (for unrelated reasons) recently. Also, I do know that the FW 800 port is unstable. I was planning on having something done sometime, it just hasn't seemed too urgent. The problem is that I have to do an SMC reset before the FW 800 port will work. It will work for one session, but then I have to reset the SMC again for the next time. I've only used it for target disk mode... do you think that maybe this is all pointing to a logic board problem?
