I have a couple 21" bushed alum Macs. They are running 10.5.8 I beleive. These computer will just shut down. I can leave them on a week and they will be ok if I dont use them for anything. If I use them they restart. It happens now matter what program is running. Any Ideas? Should I reformat?? Or is it a hardware problem?

Do you still have some kind of warranty?
And as the 21.5" iMac was released after Mac OS X 10.6 was released, I assume you meant 20" iMac, the Aluminium one, released after 8/2007.
A lot of release here.

Btw, how does the restart happen? Is it a kernel panic?

Ya I think your right on the specs. It just power offs.... No error msgs.

Those iMacs had/have issues with flaky power/dc/inverter cables, and the symptom is random shutdowns. Since it's just a cable, it's not a particularly expensive part, but it's quite a daunting replacement. Alternatively, it could be bad power supplies. I've seen a fair number of those, too.

The simplest thing you can try is an SMC reset, and just hope that fixes it. If you can find something that consistently duplicates the issue, that would make it a lot easier to figure out what the cause is. Otherwise, any attempted diagnosis will effectively be just a guess.
