Shutting down, 10.5.6, "Update boot caches" screen, then freezes. What to do?

Well, actually, it doesn't freeze. Rather, I've left it for as long as half an hour and it has, indeed, not updated the boot caches. I have no clue what's wrong, but when restarting the computer after running software update, this can be a real problem. I know there have been some problems with people regarding iPhoens 3Gs and this, but I have never plugged an iPhone into this computer.

Boy, I love updating system software. How to fix?

download onyx (google it) and run the maintenance tab on the program.
