I recently bought a WD My Book Studio 2TB to use with my 2008 iMac via Firewire 800. I have updated to the most recent firmware (1.012) and have used the VCD Manager to hide the virtual CD. I have not installed the SmartWare utilities on my iMac. The drive properly seems to go to sleep after about 10 minutes of inactivity. However, when I shut down the iMac, the drive just seems to go sleep instead of powering down. I can tell it is asleep, as the white LED blinks as per the documentation.

Is this behavior normal? How can I get the drive to completely power down automatically when the iMac shuts down instead of just sleep? Do I need to install the SmartWare utilities? Or do I need to unmount the drive and push the power button before shutting down the iMac in order to power down the drive?
