Shutting off ipod in 3.0

Probably posted somewhere, and I'm sure if it is someone will kindly point it out...but how do you shut off the iPod. Before you held button til it quit. Doesn't seem to do that any longer?

Hold home and power until you get "Slide..." and then hold the home button down.

Wonder why they made that more complicated than it was originally?

You can still just click the home button and it will quit apps. You really don't need to force quit an app unless it is misbehaving and even then, some of the apps that have frozen for me still quit when i just clicked the home button.
