sick of apps stealing screen focus—any way to stop?

I don't have many gripes with OS X, but one thing that continues to bug me is the way some applications steal the screen focus e.g. iPhoto bringing itself to the front to ask if you want to upload pictures, or iTunes asking if you want to update software, etc.

Is there someway to stop this behavior, either system-wide or specific to an application?
