I bought the then current version of this case/sleeve in 2006 and it is a fantastic bag that is still going strong today:

I am now trying to use the Mystery Ranch 3 Day Assault as my airport backpack (in addition to a suitcase that I may or may not check). I really love many aspects of the 3DAP, but it does not have a designated laptop compartment. I typically carry both a 15" MacBook Pro from about 2 years ago and an 11" Microsoft Surface in the sleeve that I linked to above.
When I've traveled previously with various backpacks that have built-in externally-accessible laptop compartments, I would just put the Incase sleeve in my suitcase or out of the way in my backpack and wait unit I arrive at my hotel to use it as a standalone bag in client meetings, with a shoulder strap.
Now, I am seeking something with similar capacity and the same size, or not much larger, but with a side-opening zipper so that I can periodically remove and re-insert both my Surface or MacBook from my MR 3DAP while in the overhead bin on an airplane with the straps facing the ground. I have TSA-Pre, but may also need to do this sometimes in the security line nonetheless.
As these computers are the heaviest thing in my pack, I am seeking for their weight to stay directly against my back as opposed to removing my current Incase sleeve during the flight and then putting it back into my pack on top of the items already in there.
To summarize, I am seeking the following features:
-Zips open from the side (and ideally also from the top)
-Smoothly-operating high quality zippers
-Durable material with padding for laptop
-Fits a 15" laptop and an 11" Microsoft Surface at the same time
-Same size as or not much larger than the case linked to above
-Some external compartments
-Can fit a MacBook power adapter and some basic laptop accessories
-Does not need to fit all of the accessories for both the MacBook and Surface all at the same time
-Allows for a detachable shoulder strap
Does anybody use a case that they really love which supports the above?
Best Regards,
Glass
