Side of iPad screen is dimmer than the other side.

Hi, I'm new here, and could use a bit of help.

My husband has an iPad 1, which I bought back in January. Tonight, I noticed that the right side of the screen has dimmed in this sort of blotchy looking mess, and I am not sure why, or what exactly it would be called. It has not had anything spilled on it, been dropped, etc., and has been in a case since the day I bought it (a case + a rubber grip on the back).

I am including photos I tried to take of the blotchy parts, but it was difficult to photograph. If anyone could possibly tell me what this is called, I would appreciate it.

That is odd, it almost seems like it got wet, somehow. I had a laptop do that once and was never sure why, it was shut-off and in it's case. I thought maybe it was condensation.
