I've created a number of sidebar shortcuts to folders I open most regularly.

However, when I eject my external drive, shortcuts to folders on that drive disappear.

Is there any way around this?

Exactly? How can you have a "shortcut" to a place that doesnt exist anymore?

What I mean is they do not re-appear when the drive is plugged back in, so if I eject the drive I lose all of my shortcuts permanently!

If you have several, you may consider creating a folder on the external drive containing the aliases. When you reconnect the drive, drag the aliases from the folder to your sidebar. AFAIK, there's no way to keep them on the sidebar if the drive isn't connected, as they would be dead links.
