Sierra issues with photos

hi

Just noticed that post updating to sierra the photos app on my MacBook 12 inch doesn't show any of the photos taken with my iPhone since update day. Shared albums are updating with new entries but not the main photo album.

iCloud is enabled and I see that the program is uploading 96gb of photos! I was on the photo sharing cloud thing before so why is it uploading them all again?
