Signal in iPhone4 bad where it was good with 3G(S)? (not deathgrip antenna issue)

Anyone having this issue?

At work had 4 bars,good 3G signal with iPhone 3G.
Now with iPhone 4, bars can go from no signal to 4 bars, to EDGE-- and I am not touching the phone (so it isn't the antenna/death grip issue).

Is this a hardware issue that is isolated to me, meaning I should get a replacement? Or is the iPhone 4 actually getting worse reception than prior iPhones?

Or is this problem something that is going to be fixed with a 4.01 update, and is somehow related to the software trying to lock into the least busy tower or whatever Apple claimed the new technology was going to do?
