In downloading Maverick I signed into iCloud but I don't think that is anything I really want. Thought it was necessary to upgrade to Maverick. Don't intend to store anything on it. Did I make a mistake and how do I rectify it? Have a 21.5 inch iMac and a new one we just got for my wife which we will be setting up tomorrow.

Go to System Preferences → iCloud and sign out there.

It's used for syncing too. So your notes, calendar, bookmarks, etc etc can sync to other devices (other macs, iPhones, iPad). Used for photostream so you can add AppleTV to that.

I find it useful but I own multiple Apple products.

I just tried that and all I could get was an option to sign in. Not sure where I am at this point.

Then doesn't look like signed into iCloud.

To Download Mavericks then would expect that signed into the AppStore which is not the same as iCloud, however iCloud Login and your AppStore Login would be using the same AppleID

Then I think I am not going to worry about it for now. I appreciate the information from everyone and I am sure I will learn more as I go along.
