This is a problem I've been wrestling with for a while (over a month) and in this time I believe I've eliminated all the obvious suspects, so I'm hoping someone might have some good ideas on how else I can diagnose this problem!
The issue is that while my network performance is generally good, I will sometimes find that certain web-pages are extremely slow to load (typically those outside the UK), however, other traffic may continue to function normally. Other times, all performance will drop off completely, however my computer still believes that it's still connected, so it's like I'm connected but with a speed of 0Kbps, with all connections timing out.
Now, my set-up is a wireless one, with a router connected to my modem, and my computer connected to the router using an ethernet-based wireless client (as the internal card for the early 2008 MacPro is worthless). Now, I believe I've eliminated the router as the problem, as other machines on my network have no issues, and I've also eliminated the ethernet/wireless client as I was previously using a USB-based one which had the same issues (this also seems to eliminate a bad ethernet port, I've tried the second one to be sure).
I've always had wireless interference issues with my machine due to limited choice in router positioning, some thick walls and practically ever neighbouring house having a wireless router these days, however during periods of slowness I've queried bother my bridge and my router for measured signal strength and they both register at the high 50-60% range. Other wireless machines are fine as well, and there seems to be no obvious pattern to when the slow-downs occur; usually restarting my bridge gives me a better connection again for a while, but as I've said I don't think the bridge is at fault.
I also believe I've ruled out software issues, as I did a fresh install of Lion to eliminate a definite software issue I was having (machine locking up). I do have Intego VirusBarrier X6 running, but I don't believe that to be the issue either as my other machines run it in the same configuration.
When the total slow-down occurs, I can usually still access my ethernet bridge's configuration pages, however, it will be unable to ping my router. To me this suggests a definite wireless issue, but I can't see anything wrong with signal strength, and other machines are fine (which seems to preclude an issue with the router as well).
I'm at a total loss, I don't suppose anyone can give me any good terminal commands or scripts to run that might be able to give me a better picture of what's going wrong and why? It's bewildering that I get normal performance most of the time, but it will just occasionally drop off for no apparent reason, requiring me to either wait till it resolves itself, or I reset the bridge to do it more quickly. It's especially confusing when I can't find any evidence of something being wrong with the bridge!
