The second beta of iOS 26 hints at the existence of an iPhone with a new display size, perhaps the iPhone 17 Air that's expected this fall.

iPhone-17-Air-Size-Feature.jpg

Macworld found a version of the classic iOS clownfish wallpaper with a "420x912@3x" resolution, which translates to a 1260 x 2736 resolution. That does not match the resolution of any iPhone that's available now, but it is similar in size to what we're expecting for the iPhone 17 Air.

Last year, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggested Apple's new ultra slim iPhone 17 model would feature a 6.6-inch display with a resolution of approximately 1260 x 2740, which is close to what was found in the beta.

With the iPhone 17 models set to come out in September with iOS 26 pre-installed, it seems likely that the wallpaper is designed for the all-new device that Apple plans or release this year.

With a 6.6-inch display size, the iPhone 17 Air will be smaller than the iPhone 17 Pro Max and larger than the standard iPhone 17. It will have a super thin chassis, which rumors suggest could measure in at around 5.5mm. Other rumored features include Apple's C1 modem and a single-lens rear camera.

assuming they don't release a fold at the same time; it'd be 6?

regular, plus, pro, pro max, se & air.
4 if you don't consider the regular/plus to be the same model, and pro/max to be the same.
The Plus is supposed to go away when the Air is introduced. Unless you want to count the Plus if last year’s models are sold at a discount.

I reckon if the foldable thing does come true, they are trialling this Air model for it. Two of these together would allow for a thinner phone.

Have there been any credible rumours of them going all in on year based naming?

I mean it is obvious and makes obvious sense, but I don't know if I've seen anyone suggest it after the iOS26 rumour.

Good to know about this. The Air will be a good phone but the disappointing things are the rumored small battery and also it looks like it will have only a single camera.

Would LOVE for this product to be successful with this ultra thin & light Design, maybe next year we'll finally get some of a successor for the mini line, a 5mm thin & light smaller Air.

Something like
18 Air (5.8' around 120g, 6.6' around 150g)
18 Pro (6.1' around 170g, 6.9' around 200g)

It’s the battery that is the biggest concern, but hopefully it will at least match the iPhone 16. The single camera will still be very good and be boosted by the AI/Neural engine but just not have Pro Raw/Res modes.

Been using iPhone since 3Gs, and recently tried a galaxy S25 edge. I have to say, my 16 pro max feels FAT and HEAVY now. I gravitate towards the android crap. :-( I Would love an iPhone Air.

I don’t blame you. The better Android phones really make one ask questions about iPhones. I’m prepared to wait and see how the new iPhone Air and the rest of the 17 line-up turns out. But if I’m disappointed I may very well go for a Samsung Edge.
