Silence Notifications while on a call

I am wondering if someone can tell me if iOS6 allows one to silence notifications during a call.

I have read about Do Not Disturb, but what I am wondering is can I set my phone to silence any notifications (text, email, etc.) during a phone call? I HATE talking to my wife or my boss and having my ear drum blown out by my text alert. Even when I set the "sounds" setting on silent, the vibration can be quite loud.

I have searched but have not be able to find this specific information. Thank you for any help with my question.

Why can't you turn Do Not Disturb on and lock your phone? Your phone call will continue and you won't get any alerts in theory I have not tested it.

That's possible, but I really would like the notifications to continue as normal (at least during the day) and just have them silenced during my phone calls.
