Silent button?

Note that videos and music/etc DO elicit sounds when the silent is on...it's more like a 'ringer/notification mute'

Maybe it only works for alarms etc? When I sample a song on iTunes, with button on silent mode, you can here the song normally.

I believe there is an option in the settings to switch the function of the side switch between mute on/off & orientation control. Check this setting - If it's set to the mute option then the switch may be faulty.

is the switch set to screen rotation lock?

No, it's set to mute. But I may just change it to rotation lock. Would use that more. I didn't realize the mute only worked for notifications etc.
