Hello,

after being read-only for a few years I decided to register at your forums today and ask a question which is a burning issue to me:

I am seeking an external storage solution for time machine backups of my iMac (750GB), a MacBook (120GB) as well as some extra space - altogether I tought about at least 1.5TB. :)

Surfing around the web I found that the best solution seems to be a 2HD SATA enclosure with a Firewire 800 connection. So far so good.

My biggest concern is the noise: I already tried the Iomega Ultramax, which is still standing next to my iMac - but the noise it makes when the drives are accessed is tedious  (compared to the iMac)
I only switch it on, when time machine gripes at again...

Now I seek an alternative which is nearly as silent as the iMac itself. :) Hopefully someone can give me a recommendation for that matter:

In order of importance to me:
- Silent operation
- Firewire 800 connectivity
- shouldnt be too ugly

Thanks in advance :)

I have a Seagate - FreeAgent 500 meg external backup. It is really quite when backing up.

Problems, it is not firewire 800 it is USB 2. It can be slow on the backup. Anyway, here is a great resource for buying hard drives and stuff.

I put two of these in my G5 as a back-up and server and have been happy with them because of the price.
