Silent iMessages

Was this feature announced? For example, if I'm unsure if my friend is awake or not and I have a low priority message to send, can I send a 'silent iMessage' (ie. will not make noise/vibrate their iPhone)?

Interesting feature, but I don't think it was something that was announced or really even rumored. I guess ultimately it's up to the recipient to control the alerts on their device.
