silent mode doesn't work

My jailbroken/unlocked iphone 2G running 2.1 will not go silent. When I flip the switch to silent I get the icon of the bell with a line through it, but the phone still makes sounds. What gives?

I restarted the phone and it works now. duh that's step one in troubleshooting dummy.

From a cursory google search apparently the problem happens when installing winterboard. Restarting immediately after installing winterboard seems to be the solution. I didn't restart immediately but it still solved the issue.
