Maybe I just dont know what im doing, but if I leave the ringer volume up, even if the switch is turned to silent, my phone still rings.

What gives?

My wife had the opposite, she had hers on ring and it stayed on silent.

Somewhere in the settings menu, she found that it was still on silent, I would check in settings.

The ringer settings are confusing, I agree. I tinkered with them trying to find the silent/vibrating, but none of the combinations worked. I finally checked the little booklet and saw the picture describing the buttons on the iphone. The rectangular one on the top left side of the ipod is a switch which silences the iphone. It works and vibrates when you switch it.

Yep slide the switch on the side. One of my favorite features :)

So simple I wonder why it hasn't been done before (maybe it has ... I just never owned a phone with one).

Yes, I have that switched so that it has the red dot displayed. In my silent settings, I have vibrate to on. In my Non-silent settings, I have everything on.

When the switch is flipped so that the red dot is displayed, my ringer still plays. No other sound plays though, just the stupid ringer. I can only turn off the ringer if I turn the sound all the way down on it, but then it wont ring if I flip the switch back to Non-silent mode.

Treos have it too! I was glad the iphone does since its one of the few treo features that really spoiled me!

So everyone's iPhone will not make any noises, even if you ringer volume is at max when you have the switch flipped to silent mode?

Correct.

When you slide the switch so the red dot shows up do you get a vibration and an icon showing on the screen to indicate silent mode?

You should.

Yep.

Do alarms only vibrate as well on silent mode?

I had the opposite problem--mine would always be on silent no matter what. I checked all the settings, reset the phone, restored the phone, etc. etc...and it still didn't work.

I ended up having to take it into an Apple Store to get it replaced.

And replacing it fixed your problem?

Check under Settings -> Sounds

It has Silent and Ring settings where you can set it to play a ringtone as well as vibrate.

In vibrate mode you can even turn vibrate off???

I haven't gone into the manuals, but the switch is there.

My Wife had the same issue. Phone switched to Vibrate and still rang. Turning phone off (not Sleep) for 2 minutes and back on solved that issue.
