Silly Question about 256-color mode

I don't really expect either vmware or parallels to expend a lot of energy on 8-bit 256 color mode these days, but I have a need for that specific video mode under either WinXP, Win2K, or Win98. I have tried all 3 of these on both parallels and vmware, and they both exhibit the same issue, on both my MB and iMac. At random times the cursor will turn to a big black square, with the upper left corner as the cursor position. Sometimes it is temporary, sometimes I have to move the cursor outside of the vm, sometimes I have to select a different process, and sometimes nothing works to get the correct cursor back. I had this issue on my MB and thought perhaps it was the GMA950, so I installed it on my wife's iMac with the same results. Does anybody have any idea what might be happening and a have suggested fix?
