Silly, Silly Shortcut Question

So, some of you may laugh at this, but what do the F5 and F6 keys do on my new 15-inch Macbook Pro?

I've turned whatever it is up and down, but notice no immediate differences.

They basically look like underscores with dots coming out of the top.
