Hi all,

Newbie question.

Will be ordering the XS Max tomorrow but can’t decide which finish will have the best scratch resistance from the stainless steel bands.

Will the gold be a coating like space black or will it be gold stainless steel?

Currently have an OG Ss Watch and has micro scratches but still looks good.

Thanks.

Are you confusing the watch and phone? In any event, if hiding scratches is your primary concern, the answer always is silver.

Just the stainless steel frame of the phone. Will probably have a leather case on it but the bottom will be exposed.

Silver does seem the right way to go.

If It’s the same surgical grade stainless that was used last year for the 2017 iPhone X, I’m sure it will scratch lightly, with the exception of the space gray that uses the PVD coating. Keep in mind, even if it does scratch with the surgical stainless bands, they can be removed with polishing cloth. Although, no one has tested the gold stainless bands as of yet, and you cannot use a polishing cloth with the space gray bands due to the PVD coating.

I am also confused between silver and gold.

The black phone, once it gets a bad scratch will have silver marks.

The silver phone can be polished to look new again. Not sure about gold.

I believe Gold will have PVD coating based on what I saw on apple.com

Thanks for your replies.

Interesting about it being a PVD coating, so hard to tell in videos.

Still undecided

Scratches in SS can be buffed out pretty easily with a rag and buffing compound. In other words, the scratches can be repaired to a mirror finish again. But if there is a color coating, you cannot buff out scratches in the coating. So assuming all things are equal otherwise, I would say the silver color is best if you plan to go without a case and expect to get some scratches.

I think I have decided on the Gold IPhone XS Max 512gb this year.

Had the silver IPhone X 256gb last year.

Prior to that all my phones have been black.

The gold stainless steel should last phone as not many IPhone X black users complained about scratches
