I polish the stainless steel frame of my iPhone X every once in a while to get rid of scratches. I read that the frame on the 12 Pro has some sort of coating that would look bad if polished. Is that true? Can some one with a X and now a 12 Pro can tell if they are any different? My choice of color depends only on that For the Pro Max.

I don't think so, this year they said during the keynote that all of the colors, including silver, have PVD coatings. Polishing would remove that coating in the spots you polish.

I see. I guess I won’t go with Silver then. I’m not a fan of white on frosted glass but I was going to get it only because I don’t use a case and all other colors supposedly chip off.

a stainless steel PVD coating would match the color underneath so it really wouldn’t matter.

I polished the corner of my silver 12 Pro already. Some people said my result isn’t proof there’s no PVD coating but it looks, feels, smells like raw stainless steel. I polished a fresh (very light) scratch out of it this morning with Autosol. I have zero doubt at this point the silver 12 Pro is missing the PVD coating.

So if you had any of the other color coated bands, you are essentially SOL?

Even with the microfiber lined case, little scuff marks are bound to appear. I can’t imagine the PVD coating being that durable that it would be free from eventual case scratches either.

Just a side thought ... Can the PVD coating be removed with a chemical like acetone to expose the natural silver stainless steel underneath? A Pacific Blue or graphite with silver bands would look sweet!

Yeah seems like all the phones are going to get scuffed no matter what happens. I just noticed this in a video I just watched. Look at the scuffs on the Graphite model.

All I see are phones which obviously had some other full-bottom-coverage case on them before the open-bottom cases were put on. Look at the circles around the lightning port and the speaker and microphone.
