SIM card from old cell to iPhone 3GS?

After recently upgrading to the new iPhone 4, I gave my old iPhone 3GS to a friend. However they don't want to pay for a full AT&T dataplan and don't need data anyway, just call and texting service. Is it possible to take an existing SIM card from their old "dumbphone" and use it in the iPhone?

After testing this it seems to work, but could there be any problems with this in the future?
