I had an old 1st gen iPhone. It broke and I got another 1st gen iPhone off eBay so
that I don't get a new two year contract. This allows me to upgrade to the
iPhone 5 when it comes out. So I transferred my old sim card to this
1st gen iPhone I got on eBay. I synced it to my new computer instead
of the one I used to sync my iPhone to as i figured it didnt matter
as to the best of my knowledge the contacts and text messages follow the sim card and that is all I really needed. Sadly though I no longer have my contacts
or text messages. Don't the contacts and text messages go with the sim
card? Why don't I have then? Is there any way I can get them back?

Everything syncs to your computer. You should sync the original iPhone, then reset the new one to factory defaults, then configure it from the backup, which will restore everything correctly.

I can't sync the original one. How do I reset the newly purchased one to factory defaults. Can i do it by putting in the sim card it came with and then putting mine back in?

You do it in iTunes, by clicking on the phone in iTunes, and selecting 'restore'. There is no reason you can't sync the old one, as it doesn't require a SIM.
