sim card replacement

Hi, just wondered if anyone can help, I have i pad 2 with 3g so it has a sim card installed, however I want to use a different network for this so was going to get a different sim from different supplier. I do remember being told previously that i phone cannot change network and once one was installed then that supplier has to be the only one and just wondered if this applied to i pad as well thanks, don't want to change sim and damage iPad Thanks Terry.
