SIM card swap to back up contacts from old phone.

Hi,

I'm looking to buy an iPhone and was wondering if its possible to put the sim card into my old Cingular phone > back up numbers to sim and then swap it back into the iphone without it getting messed up? I saw several places that explained how you could take the sim out and put it into another phone, just wasn't sure about the back up part.
