My daughter is doing a term in Shanghai and I’d like to get her a new phone for the upgraded camera and dual SIM. My understanding is that she should get a Chinese SIM when she arrives to go with her domestic Verizon chip. Does the phone need to be unlocked or is the second chip independent?

If it does need to be unlocked does that mean I should get it from Apple? I’d hate to lose the Verizon $200 trade in credit.

TIA

It is safer for your daughter to buy a guaranteed unlocked device to bring to China instead of getting an “unlocked” version from Verizon, I think.
