SIM-free available on launch day for the first time in U.S.?

Just went through the screens to do a dummy iPhone 8 preorder. I was interested to see that they were taking preorders for the SIM-free iPhone 8 and that they would be available for pickup on launch day. Isn't this a first in the U.S.? I didn't think they made SIM-free models available to order until weeks or months after the initial launch.
