You cannot. Has to be the model specific for that carrier with the sim already installed. Total bummer for anybody on AT&T or T-Mobile using iUP.

Supposedly if you contact apple support or chat they will supply you with the link for the sim free. I never tried I just reserved the Verizon and paid outright.

if you want a sim free/unlocked device you have to buy it outright unless you have verizon.

Ok followup questions: If I reserve a verizon model am I required to be a current verizon customer?
Are you planting on buying outright? Then No you don't need to be current Verizon customer. If you plan on getting the Verizon model and plan on signing up for the iUP then yes you need to have a Verizon account.

Yeah I'm planning buying outright. Is there no difference between the Verizon model and the Sim Free model outside of the inclusion or exclusion of a sim card and sim card tool?

There is absolutely no difference and are identical. Yes the verizon model has the sim card in it and no sim card tool. While the sim-free comes with the tool but no sim card.
