Sim free phone from Apple and get a Sim from Verizon

My spouse needs to upgrade her phone and we are thinking of buying a 8+ sim free from apple. My spouse's phone is ancient and needs a new sim from Verizon to work. Now wondering how much do I have to pay to get a sim from Verizon.

Also, is there an upgrade free when buying from apple?

It is my understanding, that even if you buy from Apple, Verizon will still make you pay the $30.00 upgrade fee.

I think they are free from corporate stores, or you can order a free replacement through your online account.

I thought you won't be billed an upgrade fee if you bring your own device, which is what i am doing buying my own phone from Apple.
