iPhone XR SIM question

probably will move up to the XR today on ATT NEXT plan.

what happens if I switch the ATT SIM in my current phone to the new phone before I power it up for the first time? I have just passed the 30 month period on my old phone so the old phone is paid off.

It should accept the SIM and waive the activation fee provided you paid in full from the Apple store.

If you bought from the carrier, you may need to use the SIM from the new phone for activation, and then insert your old SIM.

Took the sim out of the old phone put it in the new phone. Instant connection.
