I’m sure this has been discussed numerous times but hoping you all can help

My wife and I Both have the X’s and I decided to use her upgrade for the Max since she didn’t want to.

Yesterday we backed up our phones, swapped phones (I’ll send hers back) and restored as normal.

When the Max comes Friday is it as simple as me popping out my sim and putting it in the Max, the sim from the max in the old x I’m sending back or is it necessary to contact Verizon?

Thanks

Did you order the Verizon or the SIM free version of the iPhone?
If you bought the sim-free version then yes, you need to move the sim to the new one.

if you bought the verizon version then just turn on the new phone, it will activate itself and the sim inside the new iPhone (with the phone number you provided at the time of purchase). the activation of the new sim will trigger an upgrade fee of $30 with Verizon .

there is another thread in here about avoiding the $30 upgrade fee.

No, you don’t have to talk to anyone in VZW for this. it’s self service :)

But it will be activated with my wife’s phone number if I do this and we don’t want that. We want my number in it since she will keep my phone

Sounds like you bought the verizon version and not the SIM free version .

You have two options
(1) Follow the steps I explained for the VZW iPhone. The phone will activate with your wife’s phone and will disable the sim in her phone. Once the activation process is complete, take the new sim out of the new iPhone and give it to your wife and insert your old SIM in the new phone: the phone number is associated with the sims, not the phone.

(2) I did this last year and it worked for me: take out the sim that cane with your new phone BEFORE you turn it on for the first time and insert your sim. Go through the activation process (the iPhone will ask you some questions) . if it works then that’s it and most likely VZW won’t charge you the upgrade fee . Some people report that this method did not work for them but it worked for me. if it works please throw away the new sim because if the VZW network detects it then it wil activate it and disable your wife’s sim card

I highly recommend you try option (2) first. if it doesn’t work then just insert the sim that came with your new phone and follow the steps in option 1 .

i hope my explanation was easy to understand :)

Yep just put your old sim in your new phone you are good to go. Now if you would have bought the phone at a t mobile store they will charge you an additional $25 as a fee to not help you set up your new phone and sim. Happened to me. I told the lady she was not doing anything as I was putting in my old sim into my new phone. Still got charged but later got it credited back, sorry for the aside.

Some AT&T users are reporting here that the swim swap doesn’t work and that the included sim must be used (there is another thread on this going on right now) if the device requires activation so swapping is not guaranteed to work.

It seems that devices that have issues with sim swapping are those tied to carriers bought via Apple IUP, att/vzw/sprint (no clue about t-mobile) and best buy. Apparently devices bought directly from the Apple store don’t have the sim issue. That’s why Apple sells the sim -free iPhone which is meant to be for users who will be swapping SIMs

As I said earlier , try the swim swap first and let us know if that worked well.

I just got my iPhone XS MAx VZW. I took the new sim out and inserted an inert never used SIM I had. I also tried swapping with the old SIM.
Unfortunately it seems Apple changed the rules: As soon as the iPhone activates, it activates the new SIM automatically that came with the phone (even if it is not inserted) and disables the old one. This means (at least for me with VZW) that the sim swap approach did not work. IF the same happens to you then you will have to follow the process, your wife sim will be deactivated, give her the new SIM which has her number and insert your sim in the new phone. This will (most likely) trigger the upgrade fee.
If you are lucky to get the sim swap to work let me know -- I wasn;t able to get it to work

I really would like to get this cleared out, I actually stoped the activation process trying to be sure if the SIM swap works or not (ATT AUP)
