Simple little question for newbie

I just recently switched, and there is one thing that has been irritating me, but I am sure there is a simple solution I am not aware of yet. Does anyone know how to go back to the desktop without closing all of the applications. In Windows, there is a little icon button that will take you directly to the desktop and you can place it anywhere. I am just wondering if OSX has a similar feature?

You can press F11 and Exposé will take you straight back to your Desktop, if that's any help?

You can hide your windows (option+h)

I hot-cornered it to the lower left since I was so used to going there to click "show desktop" on windows anyway.
