I'm just wondering when I buy a hard drive without any external enclosure, will it arrive in a metal case (pic1) or not (pic2).
Namely I'm looking at Seagate 2.5 SATA drives for my MB 2.16GHz

Thanks for reading.

The second picture is just a marketing/advertising shot showing the internal components of a hard drive. Your new drive will look like picture 1.

Indeed no 2 unless something is terribly wrong.

Unless sealed (not air tight but nearly and with lots of filters) a drive will develop data errors pretty quick!

Also removing the cover would void the warrenty.

Although I once rescued data from a drive I dropped by removing the cover. it was dented and I guess the top stopped the arm moving. Got all the data to a new drive and binned it.

I just remembered the WD Raptor drive that came in one model that had a window built in too-- quite a brainstorm it was since when you mounted it you couldn't see anything anyways!
