Simple question on External HD install

I'm assuming your external is already in an enclosure of one sort or another.
1) Connect the drive to your computer by Firewire or USB (Firewire preferred).
2) Open Applications (folder) > Utilities (folder) > Disk Utility (application)
3) Now select the new drive in Disk Utility and Erase it in the Erase tab. You should also select the format you want at this time (as well as if you want to partition it).
HFS+ is how you probably want it unless you want to connect it to a windows machine occasionally. Then you might want to go with FAT.
