Simple Time Machine Question

I have I drive that has some data I need to recover. I was wondering if I could put additional data on the drive? Or does that corrupt the time machine data? I just need another place to put some files but don't want to delete the time machine backup just yet...

Yes you can put other data on the drive but TM won't back it up.
