Maybe you use your AirPods to FaceTime/Skype/etc. on your Mac, so you use them as an Headset. When the microphones are active, the audio quality is really bad. So if you option click on the speaker icon in the menu bar, you can choose the Macs' internal microphone instead, but still get the audio out on your AirPods.

You will get the maximum audio quality and also the battery life of the AirPods is a lot longer, the microphones in the Macs are really good as well.

I just wanted to share this simple "trick", it should work with other Bluetooth Headsets as well! Maybe you've never thought about that option.
