Is it possible if a single processor 2009/2010 Mac Pro could be basically upgraded to a dual processor model of the same generation? I am thinking it is possible due to the processor/memory board being separate from the main logic board. Or if you did do this, would it realize it was not the "correct configuration", and then not boot up, or have errors while running?

It is possible but you will not really save money compared to selling the old machine and buying the right one. On top you have a certain risk of screwing up the expensive sockets on the CPU tray unless you have a lot of experience with building computers.
