I am currently working on a project which requires me to take time lapsed screenshots of two displays continuously. Since this should go on 24/7, I need to automatize the process. After playing with Automator, I managed to launch and refresh the contents on the screens before each screenshot. The only part I couldn't figure out is how to get a single screenshot of the two screens at once.

I know, I can do it manually, but this defeats the purpose of automation. I can use the Terminal or Automator, but the result is two separate screenshots for each of the screens. I tried a couple of other programs which gave me the same limitations.

So, I need a screenshot of two Thunderbolt Displays as one 1440x5120 pixel image, and this should be done automatically.

If someone can show me a way or an app that can do it, my problem will be solved. Otherwise, I have a couple of questions:

- Is there a simple photo editing program that I can incorporate to Automator, which could easily stitch the two screenshots into one?

- If nothing works, I may consider buying one of the cheapest 4K displays to use for the screenshots. I'm pretty sure I can fit all my content in one 4K display, and still get fine details. I'm wondering if a cheap 4K monitor from Dell will work with OS X?

- If so, do you think I can use it in portrait mode?

- My last question is about the right Mac for the task. Right now I can get a current generation Mac Mini or an iMac. Are there any limitations for these models in terms of compatibility with 4K displays, or should I also budget for a Mac/Macbook Pro?

Thanks I'm advance for all the answers and ideas.
