I'm completely new to Siri and so confused about this.

I connect my iPhone 14 Pro Max to my car stereo via Bluetooth. No problem.

But when I use Siri, Siri responds via the car radio - this is the same as the Apple Maps feature "Directions on Radio", which I have turned off (the old HFP setting, now renamed).

I can't seem to find the same setting for Siri. If I have the radio off, Siri will speak via the radio, then the radio switches on and I have to manually turn it off. I hate this, I'm happy just for Siri to speak via my iPhone, which is plenty loud enough.

Can someone help me find the setting? The phone is connected just fine to the car via Bluetooth.

Your topic is wrong. Your phone (including Siri) is connected via bluetooth to the radio.

And that's the whole point of connecting the phone via bluetooth to the radio: it plays through the radio.

Since you have your radio off, what is the point of connecting the phone (and Siri) via bluetooth to your radio?

I suspect the setting you are looking for is a setting within your vehicles infotainment system, not iPhone. More info about your vehicle make, model, year, and infotainment system would be so much more helpful.

In your iPhone Bluetooth settings, enter the details of your car's bluetooth connection and change the device type from "Car" to something else, like "Headphones". I think that should change the kind of profile it triggers when answering with Siri, so it shouldn't turn your radio on.

You're right, but that's not quite what I meant. Siri is using HFP to connect through the radio, rather than the already established bluetooth connection.

Great, I'll try that!

It's a 2014 Peugeot 308, factory-installed infotainment system.

Oh, OK, I get it. I wouldn't be surprised, though, if it was hardwired by Apple like that. I mean, you can change how the voice prompts of Google Maps on iOS are transmitted, but it's in the app, not systemwide. Other than the (possibly working?) trick with changing the car audio to headphones in BT settings I am not sure if there is a way to change it.
