'siri like' software for os x

Hi guys, is there a way to get the mac to read sections of text out to you? I tried clicking on the voiceover utility in sys pref and it went crazy, describing everything - I just want to be able to highlight a piece of text and say ctrl click and have the mac read it out loud.

does anything like this exist at all?
