Since updating to iOS 18 (iPhone 15 Pro), Siri no longer gives an audible acknowledgement when my phone is unlocked. For example, “hey Siri, set a reminder for blah blah blah”. The reminder is set, but the feedback is just silence.

Meanwhile, asking the same command while the phone is locked results in the usual, “okay, I’ll remind you blah blah blah”.

Is this a bug, or a new setting somewhere? I sure hope it’s not a new “feature” because it’s awful.

UPDATE: It is a setting under Siri -> Responses. It was defaulted to Automatic, which apparently decides not to speak if your phone is unlocked. I set it to Prefer Spoken Responses and now we’re back to normal. Much thanks to pk0 for the tip! I completely missed this somehow.

confirmed on iOS 18.1 beta 4, when I prompt Siri while unlocked, it will ding. once im done dictating the reminder, she will close it out without a sound or confirmation noise. while locked, she will confirm the reminder has been set.

I am surprised I can’t find any mention of this anywhere. Does nobody use Siri? Haha 😆

This seems like it would be a huge deal for accessibility.

I’ll have Siri set a timer or alarm or a text and there’s no audio feedback. I also tried asking Siri a tongue twister and the only answer was the words on the screen, no audio.

Yeah this is exactly what I’m experiencing, with all commands. But only when unlocked. Does yours also work correctly when accessing Siri while the phone is locked?

I just checked and it works when locked. Same issue as you. I tried all the different things. I turned the phone off and on, turned Siri off and on and it didn’t do anything.

What do you have set in Settings>Siri>Spoken Responses? If you set it to Prefer Spoken Responses does it work?

Ahhh that was it!!! It was set to “Automatic”. I changed it to Prefer Spoken and now we’re back to normal 👍🏻

Thank you!!
