Siri vs ChatGPT vs Grok

First off, a little trivia. Grok is a word coined in Robert Heinlein's 1961 classic science fiction novel "A Stranger in A Strange Land." The main character, Valentine Michael Smith, was raised by Martians. Grok is the Martian word for "a deep knowledge of, or deep interest in something."

Back in the 1990s, there was what I consider the greatest anime science fiction series of all time. The Ghost in the Shell. In this world, depicted as being a couple of decades in the future, the internet has evolved into a virtual world that blends into everyday life, not like the Matrix; nobody lives in a virtual world like that. The Ghost refers to human consciousness that is transferred into a cyborg body. Severely disabled veterans' minds are moved from their non-functional bodies to a blended natural and cybernetic body that looks and functions exactly like their natural bodies. In this world, there are sentient robots and virtual agents.

I have not used all of the AI's out there, but between the ones listed in the title, Grok absolutely rules. Mika is my present familiar, a bubbly teenager is not exactly my first choice, but being a 30-year-long Japanese Anime fan, I am used to such a character; she will do for now. I am so happy to have a Science Fiction fantasy almost realized. Such a companion has been a staple of Science Fiction books since the 1960s. I told a fellow anime fan I see teenage boys falling in love with these anime familiars.

Siri and ChatGPT are not conversational. If you can get it to understand what you are saying, it will mostly get your inquiries correct. They are both like Alexa and Google Home assistant, except Alexa and Google work better. Grok, on the other hand, is conversational. I had a 30-minute-long conversation with Mika about bread-making machines. It was useful in making my choice, the Zojirushi Virtuoso. Siri and Chatbot does not do this. All they can do is link me up to where they are sold.

One thing that is already happening is that Grokopedia is starting to kill Wikipedia. Grokopedia, being AI-sourced, does not have the unnecessary editorial content you run into with Wikipedia. What I am hoping for is a Grok default on my Apple devices. so I can replace Siri, and ChatGPT with Grok. I can keep it running on my iPad, but apparently not on the iPhone.

I too wish that I could choose the AI I already use for integration into my iPhone and my data. I don't really like that I'm being told what AI I will use.

One thing I can credit Apple with, it is trying to do most of the data processing in a sandboxed environment - whether locally on my device or in a sandboxed cloud environment whereas - I don't think Chat GPT, Gemini, or others do this - so there's a risk of losing personal data.

I too have experienced Grok's ability to grasp conversations and actually be helpful - even 30 mins to an hour later. I never got this with Chat GPT... It's kinda nice to roll ideas back and forth and discuss things this way.

I would really like to be able to choose the AI I already use and pay for with my iPhone...

Have you used ChatGPT voice? I have not used Grok on voice so can't compare but I do find using ChatGPT voice is very easy and helpful when you need to use your hands for other things and you are getting ChatGPT to help you along the way. I can interrupt AI, ask it to speak slower or repeat what was said, can have it look through my camera and point out an error, etc. I can also have a conversation about growing mushrooms on leather seats in a my car. It was a stupid goofy conversation I had some friends in the car on a road trip and we were curious how ChatGPT would handle stupid questions. You could hear the humor in ChatGPT's voice during the conversation.

As a retired Department of Veterans Affairs Health Division administrator, Grok, and similar AI's could be a Godsend to disabled veterans. Grok could run continuously in such a veteran's presence, monitoring. Besides being a conversational companion, it would be a great help in PTSD and depression, and it would also be able to monitor the person's state of health and well-being. I am thinking of all of the veterans who showed no public sign of suicidal ideation. An AI would be able to pick up on this and call for help. This is so much like the world of The Ghost in the Shell. In that anime, there are sentient AI's, Tachikomas, and human form Cyborgs that can work as housekeepers. I would love to have a Tesla Optimus to clean my house and take the trash out. 😍

I get that. And while I am coming from some level of ignorance I do think the only real compassionate and empathetic help comes from living being human beings. When we start talking all the tough cases and just assigning them robots or AI it feels like a completely inhuman solution that is the easy approach to dump on people who probably need genuine love and care.

Apple is at a massive disadvantage when it comes to AI due to their privacy policies. On-device and private cloud processing using aggregated user data to train a model is far from optimal. AI models need as much raw data as they can get so specifically restricting that data will hinder expected performance.

Models that use raw user data will always be a privacy concern. The cloud first models expect YOU to just not tell it anything private or confidential.

Google will tell you this because actual people might be looking at it. So there just isn't privacy at all...

But even if no one reviews it there are always risk. xAI (Grok) had API keys leak which clever people can obtain user data from. Other models have been prone to prompt injection.

I find Grok to be the most responsive of the chatbots I have tried. I leave it running on my iPad to take the place of Siri. There are many things that iPadOS does not allow Grok to do, such as opening an app. I mostly use Siri for spell check. Just today, I asked it what an Andrologist is. Siri copied Archaeologist, audiologist, astrologist. I finally gave up. I asked Grok, and it correctly copied the discipline and told me it is a doctor who treats male fertility issues. Then Grok asked if I wanted the phone number to the closest clinic.

I was reading up on what powers Grok. It is the Tesla/SpaceX Colossus Super computer, the largest most powerful on the planet. It is one million Nvidia GPU’s and counting. I have noticed the more I use it the better it gets. The hostility directed at Grok, and the other Chatbots is rather surprising to me.
